The Top Ten -- Holidays

Posted by thegeekcorner on May 25, 2009 at 9:23 PM

It's another instalment of the top ten list folks.  This time we are doing holidays.  Why?  Well, it's Memorial Day!  So in honor of Memorial Day, we'll go ahead and see just what holidays make me happy.

Number Ten:  Columbus Day

Ah yes, Columbus Day.  This may seem like a weird choice to start off the list with.  Let me explain to you why.  You see, every Columbus Day, the library gets the day off.  That's right, no working for me when I worked at the library back then.  You better believe that we'd have to work every other day of the year, but we'd get Columbus Day off.  And I loved that.  And I still do.  I observe it every year by thinking about how different this world would be if he never got here.  And it normally ends up looking like very tan and rather more organic.

Number Nine:  Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Again, a crazy pick.  And this runs along the same lines as the one above this.  MLK Day coming around, and booya, no school for southern Maryland kids.  Now, I'm not so sure about the rest of the United States, cause I know for a fact that up here in Michigan they don't get it off.  And I laugh at them.  It's the easiest day off in the world, and it's all because of black people suffering.

Number Eight:  St. Patrick's Day

Ah yes, St. Patrick's day.  I just like this day because it's a day that it's okay to get completely wasted and it would be totally fine.  Plus, it gives me a good reason to whip out my green library shirt and not too terribly much like a dork.  I've always had fun on these days, plus giving that cute girl in class a light pinch was always fun.  Oh, when doing such things wasn't concerned sexual harassament.

Number Seven: Fair Day

FAIR DAY!!!  Fair day is lots of fun.  Now, I don't think we got it off when I was in school, though I could be very wrong about that.  I justed like that students could get in for a damn good price.  I always liked the fair, even if it was the supreme expemplar of white trash.  And this is the good old Southern Maryland white  trash too.  Though, if any of you are ever in northern Michigan during the fair season, they have an awesome song that plays on the radio.  Going to the fair....

Number Six:  Thanksgiving

This day is just so great because you can have lots and lots and lots of food.  Seriously, if you like food, this is one of the great days of the year.  The number one reason I like this day though is because of how much pumpkin pie is to be found.  I love pumpkin pie, so much so that it bumps up this holiday to number six.  Definitely my favorite pie.  Plus, seeing the family is always fun.  Yay for good times.

Number Five:  Pi Day

This is the one math related holiday on the list.  On this day, you just sit around, eat pie, and make really bad math jokes all day, all in the name of that wonderfully irrational number of pi.  I think the best Pi Day I've ever celebrated was in my Junior year.  My entire math class just sat around, eating pie, and generally having a good time, trying to say pi to the farthest digit.  I even have a pi day shirt.  I didn't do so good, but whatever.

Number Four:  Fourth of July

I love the fireworks.  Every Fourth of July I would set off with my family to the local fair grounds (where another of my favorite holidays is also held) and grab a spot on  grass to lay our beach towels and wait an hour or so before the fireworks began.  And then the fireworks begins!  BOOM!  CRASH! WHISTLE!  Ah, if there is one holiday on this list that is purely American, it is the 4th of July.  We're showing that we kick ass by shoting crap into the hair.  It always puts a smile on my face.

Number Three:  New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is the second of the drinking holidays up here.  Yes, it's a ay to get out with your friends and bring in the new year, but really, people just sit around, stay up past midnight, getting drunk and shotting off noise makers and trying to get lucky.  But, you know, it also brings people together, and as sappy as it is, I would love to be one on of those guys who propose to their girlfriend at the stroke of midnight.  Or at the very least I would love to kiss someone at midnight.  The only girl I've been with at midnight is someone I'm related too.  Even Amanda didn't want to see me at midnight.  Oh well though, it'll happen one day.

Number Two:  Halloween

Halloween is such a good holiday.  You get to go up to strangers and ask them for candy.  Man, few things beat that.  Oh sure, you always had that one house that gave out crap things, but at least they gave you that pencil, or that toothbrush.  It's still a fun day to get out and dress up as a Vulcan and just rock the entire neighborhood.  It's like a step below LARPing, only it's socially acceptable.  Plus, it gives girls a good reason to dress in far too skimpy outfits and parade around in them.  And I'm never against girls being a pirate whore.

Number One:  Christmas

Come on, what did you honestly think was going to take the top spot?  Of course it was going to be Christmas.  Nothing beats getting presents under the tree.  Yeah, we all know Santa is someone sitting within five feet of you, but that's alright.  We get to sit next to each other, smiling the morning away, and opening up things that we really want, even if just because we like getting stuff.  And I know some of us love giving stuff too.  Like me.  I would give everyone I know thousands of dollars worth of gifts if I have the money and they would let me.  Seriously, this is such a good holiday.  It's so great, even the Muslims love it.  And that's saying something.

So there you have it guys.  Christmas beats all.  And I think most people would agree with me.

Peace Out.
